Cannabis for Period Pain: Fight Cramps with Cannabis!

Periods are a natural part of life – but we can all admit – they sometimes suck. Bloating, PMS and crazy food cravings are all familiar to many women, but cramps might be the worst accompanying symptom.

Women with PCOS, endometriosis or uterine fibroids tend to especially suffer from painful debilitating cramping that can really interfere with life. Many women report feeling tired, moody and uncomfortable dealing with their monthly visitor – being in terrible pain on top of that is a tough pill to swallow every month.

Many women deal with cramps through the use of pain medication, birth control, and other pharma-based methods. But, if those methods aren’t completely working or are contributing to negative side effects, we know MANY women who swear by the benefits of using cannabis to help with period pain. Some even say that with marijuana use during periods, they can forgo pharmaceuticals altogether.

Cannabis is well known for its amazing pain-fighting abilities. As far back as 1596, a Chinese medical text listed the use of cannabis to easy menstruation symptoms. Queen Victoria herself even famously used herb; she apparently received a supply of indica each month.

With 10- 15% of patients attending a chronic pain clinic use it as part of their therapy, it’s no surprise that medicating with cannabis can help ease monthly back pain, sore breasts, and cramping. Cannabis-based products can even be applied topically through creams and patches. Lucky women in California even have access to what the media has been referring to as “cannabis tampons”. In reality, they’re suppositories that are said to relieve pain on the spot and then absorb into the body – so, if you’re looking for these for pain, remember: they don’t help absorb moisture. Use a pad too.

As for ingestible forms of cannabis therapy, smoking is an option, vaping provides a slightly healthier alternative – and edibles even better – though not everyone enjoys the body buzz they can cause. Andrea Dobbs, who helps treat women’s PMS symptoms at the Village, a Vancouver-based dispensary, found that out the hard way.

She despised the feeling a chocolate edible gave her but discovered the aftereffects were helpful. It was then she realized by controlling doses and using different products, like the aforementioned creams and sometimes bath salts, she was able to find relief. The lesson learned: there may be a bit of trial and error, and if you can find someone like Dobbs near you, take advantage of their knowledge before you end up in pain…and having a panic attack.
